Nestled in the heart of the Plateau Valley, the Town of Collbran is a small community with deep roots and big character. Located just east of Grand Junction in Mesa County, Colorado, Collbran is home to around 369 residents who take pride in their town’s rich heritage, scenic setting, and strong sense of community.

Surrounded by sweeping ranchlands and backed by the stunning Grand Mesa, Collbran serves as both a civic and economic hub for the valley and a welcoming basecamp for visitors exploring Vega State Park, the Grand Mesa Scenic and Historic Byway, and the vast recreational opportunities throughout Western Colorado.

A Legacy of Ranching and Resilience

Ranching in CollbranRanching is at the core of Collbran’s identity. For generations, families in the valley have raised cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, and the hay to feed them. Long before highways and trucks, livestock were herded across the DeBeque Cut-off to reach railroad stock pens for shipment to market. Eggs and milk were once delivered to The Creamery in Collbran, a key part of the local economy.

While the challenges of modern times have led some families to sell portions of their land, the spirit of ranching continues. Today, the valley is also home to elk, llama, and goat ranches, and cowboys on horseback—or even ATVs—can still be seen moving herds through town every spring and fall, honoring time-honored traditions.

The local school mascot, The Cowboys, proudly reflects this heritage and the community’s enduring ties to its agricultural roots.
